We would like to introduce you to EmConSoil – a Multi-Stakeholder Network for Emerging Soil Contamination, an international network bringing together organisations and professionals dealing with emerging contaminants in soil and groundwater.

About EmConSoil

EmConSoil was initiated in 2018 by OVAM, the Public Waste Agency of Flanders (Belgium), in response to the growing challenges associated with emerging contaminants in soil and groundwater.

Issues related to substances such as PFAS, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, microplastics and other contaminants of emerging concern increasingly cross traditional boundaries between environmental science, contaminated land management, water management, human health, regulation and industrial responsibility. At the same time, many countries and regions are facing similar questions concerning investigation, risk assessment, remediation, regulation and long-term management.

EmConSoil was created from the conviction that these challenges cannot be addressed effectively by individual organisations, disciplines or countries working in isolation.

The network therefore aims to connect policymakers and regulators, researchers, environmental consultants, remediation specialists, laboratories, industry, site owners, professional associations and other stakeholders involved in the management of soil and groundwater contamination.

Its main objectives are to:

• facilitate international exchange of knowledge, data and practical experience;
• connect scientific knowledge, policy development and professional practice;
• exchange technical and regulatory approaches between countries and regions;
• encourage collaboration between different sectors and disciplines;
• identify new and emerging challenges at an early stage;
• contribute to practical and sustainable strategies for managing emerging contaminants and their potential impacts on human health and ecosystems.

An open and free platform for knowledge exchange

A key principle of EmConSoil is that participation is free of charge. EmConSoil wants knowledge and professional exchange on emerging contaminants to be accessible to everyone with relevant expertise or interest, regardless of organisation, sector or country.

Knowledge and experience are exchanged through webinars, workshops, newsletters, conferences and other collaborative activities, which provide opportunities to learn from each other and establish new international contacts.

EmConSoil is an open international platform rather than a network limited to a particular profession, country or regulatory perspective. An important objective is to bring together people who may be working on the same environmental challenges from very different perspectives.

We are therefore reaching out to your organisation to introduce EmConSoil and to invite you and your members to become acquainted with the network. We would be pleased if you could share information about EmConSoil within your professional community and would welcome opportunities for future exchange and collaboration.

ENSOr V7 – Brussels, March 2027

One of the activities within the EmConSoil network is ENSOr, an international conference where professionals from science, policy and practice meet to exchange knowledge and discuss emerging issues in soil and groundwater contamination.

The next edition, ENSOr v7, will take place in Brussels in March 2027, with particular attention to the impact of emerging contaminants on human health and society.

In line with the open character of EmConSoil, participation in ENSOr is also completely free of charge, making the conference accessible to a broad international community of professionals, researchers, policymakers and other stakeholders.

The call for contributions is currently open, with a deadline of 30 September 2026. Presentations, practical cases, pitches and especially interactive workshops are welcomed.
